Healthcare and health research transcend national borders. The forthcoming introduction of the European Health Data Space (EHDS) will have a far-reaching impact on health research by creating a uniform legal framework, methods of data exchange and common content interoperability.<\/span><\/p>\n

Representatives of the German Medical Informatics Initiative (MII), the Swiss initiative SPHN (Swiss Personalized Health Network) and Health-RI (Health-Research Infrastructure) from the Netherlands have developed a joint future agenda for data usage projects. This agenda aims to identify gaps and weaknesses in current infrastructures and accelerate preparation for the EHDS. The paper now published is the main result of a workshop held in Berlin in June 2023 and the subsequent intensive dialog between the three national initiatives.<\/span><\/p>\n

The workshop had the declared aim of addressing the upcoming challenges of the EHDS in a targeted manner and learning from each other; in addition, synergies are to be created and parallel structures abolished or avoided in future. Both similarities and significant differences between the three national projects became apparent.<\/span><\/p>\n

The participants dealt intensively with topics such as the legal framework, informed patient consent, semantic interoperability, data exchange processes, failures and unresolved challenges as well as funding and sustainability.<\/span><\/p>\n

From MIRACUM and for the MII, Prof. Dr. Hans-Ulrich Prokosch and Prof. Dr. Thomas Ganslandt were participants and authors of the workshop and the paper.<\/span><\/p>\n
