Joint workshop in Berlin sets signal for cross-sector standardization

On December 17th 2018, the workshop “LOINC: Digitalisation in the Laboratory medicine requires uniform coding” took place in Berlin. More than 100 experts from science, medical care and industry discussed the potential of LOINC-coded laboratory data for digitalisation in the health care system together with representatives of politics and actors of the German health care system in Berlin. The full-day workshop was organized under the German medical informatics initiative by DGKL (German Society for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine), DIMDI (German Institute of Medical Documentation and Information) and TMF (Technology, Methods and Infrastructure for Networked Medical Research). At the beginning MIRACUM member and speaker of the working group “Interoperability” Prof. Dr. Thomas Ganslandt presented the German medical informatics initiative. In addition to the advantages of coding, the workshop also pointed out its current limitations. For example, LOINC coding alone is not sufficient for the interpretation of laboratory results. Additional information on laboratory analysis such as the measuring system, the unit, the time stamp or patient-related data must be used. The workshop participants agreed that politicians were called upon to support digitalisation in laboratory data exchange in the short term through legal deadlines and incentives for service providers, including the establishment of suitable authorized coordination structures and moderation processes.

2nd MIRACUM Symposium

On March 28th-29th, we invite again to our annual MIRACUM Symposium which will take place in Mainz. Following our successful scheme from 2018, we will have top-class Keynote Speakers. Among others we are looking forward to Christian Lovis (University of Geneva, Switzerland) who will present on the Swiss Personalized Health Network (SPHN) and Reinhold Sojer (Swiss Medical Association) focussing on the Swiss Electronic Patient Record. At our first symposium in Erlangen in 2018 we introduced the scope and spectrum ouf our consortium. Now in 2019 we would like to give an insight of the first results of the development and networking phase of MIRACUM. Registration will be possible starting in January 2019 with more detailed information on the programme.

Munich Digital Health Summit

The DIFUTURE consortium invited to the Munich Digital Health Summit on 29th – 30th November 2018 – and representatives from politics, science, medicine and medical informatics followed this invitation.

The event gathered top speakers from the Munich research hot spots as well as international experts in the field of medical informatics. One of them was Prof. Prokosch who was invited to present first results from the MIRACUM project, also emphasising cross-consortial activities of the BMBF medical informatics initiative. MIRACUM goes DataSHIELD – Privacy preserving data analysis Workshop 2018

Privacy Preserving Data Analysis is becoming ever more important as society would like to benefit from the data available, while also not infringing in people’s privacy. DataSHIELD comprises a set of tools, which allows researchers to analyse data, without giving the researcher access to individual level data. In this manner it would allow a researcher to explore aggregate statistics of data, such as the mean age of a population, but not disclose any information about the ages of the individual patients.

As part of the MIRACUM effort to create a privacy preserving hospital analysis network, MIRACUM researchers took part in the DataSHIELD Workshop 2018 and presented their contribution to the DataSHIELD community. Julian Gruendner (Erlangen) presented “A queue-Poll Extension for standardised, monitored, indirect and secure DataSHIELD access to your data” and Stefan Lenz (Freiburg) presented “Deep Learning with Boltzmann Machines” adjusted to work with DataSHIELD to ensure privacy preserving data analysis. Daniela Zöller (Freiburg) presented a “Distributed regression modelling for selecting markers in DataSHIELD”, which allows for privacy preserving selection of the most important variables in a given dataset. The workshop was a large success and the participants gained a good insight into the issues of privacy preserving analysis, the newest statistical methods in this area, as well as the infrastructure necessary for a data analysis network. The relationships fostered during this workshop will benefit the MIRACUM project in the future and first collaborations have already been established between the MIRACUM consortium and other member of the DataSHIELD community, which will help to streamline future development of the necessary DataSHIELD infrastructure.

MIRACUM representatives at the 6th European i2b2/tranSMART meeting in Geneva

Several members of the MIRACUM team have participated at the 6th European i2b2/tranSMART meeting in Geneva. Thomas Ganslandt (Mannheim) presented a keynote about the current status of the Medical Informatics Initiative Demonstrator Study Study and Jan Christoph illustrated in his presentations the value, utility and usability of the tranSMART platform for researchers and medical students. The MIRACUM team members participating at this international meeting further followed a large variety of speeches about i2b2 and tranSMART updates as well as two interesting overview presentations into the Swiss Personalized Health Network (SPHN) and the Personalized Health and Related Technologies – ETH Domain Strategic Focus Area (PHRT). Especially the exchange with SPHN representatives illustrated similarities between the MI-I funding concept, the MIRACUM  approach and the interoperability work pursued within SPHN, which might offer potential for future cooperation.

Mannheim offers a new professorial position for “Medical Data Science”

The University of Applied Sciences Mannheim offers a professorial post in the Department of Computer Science for the summer semester 2019.
In addition to lectures, the accomplishment of courses as well as the active participation in research activities and in the MIRACUM project will be the key tasks.

MIRACUM welcomes Dresden and Greifswald as new partners

On September 1st 2018 the University Medicine Dresden and the University Medicine Greifswald officially joined the MIRACUM consortium. With about 5.4 million euros funding from the BMBF in total, Dresden and Greifswald will establish their own data integration centres over the next 3.5 years, actively contribute to the success of the MIRACUM consortium and thus also to the success of the German medical informatics initiative (MII).

“Due to new technologies, patients can be characterized and treated more and more individually. For this purpose, patient data must be analyzed with system medicine methodologies, taking into account the strict data protection requirements. Managing such large amounts of heterogeneous data requires an appropriate efficient IT infrastructure. Further this can be the basis for a general electronic patient record for all service providers.” says Prof. Albrecht, Medical Director of the University Hospital Dresden. With the establishment of the data integration centre, Dresden creates the necessary infrastructure. Patient data can then be used for research, e.g. to link disorders with genetic markers or to integrate innovative therapies more quickly into patient care.
“To support doctors and researchers, we will create an ecosystem of high-quality tools.” adds Professor Martin Sedlmayr, project manager in Dresden and professor of medical informatics at the Institute of Medical Informatics and Biometry. Regarding to his expertise, Dresden will contribute to the (further) development and provision of the research data repository based on the OMOP data model and the corresponding OHDSI tools for visualization and evaluation.

University Medicine Greifswald contributes expertise in data protection and the innovative project KAS+ to MIRACUM
With the introduction of a research-supporting EHR system (KAS+), the University Medicine Greifswald has done important groundwork for future challenges.  “The KAS+ already enables us to make data from patient care automatically available to research. MIRACUM allows us to share this data with other hospitals as well. At the same time, MIRACUM gives an important new momentum for the further development of our infrastructures at Greifswald.” explains Prof. Wolfgang Hoffmann, project manager for the research part of the KAS+ and managing director of the Institute for Community Medicine.
As Consent Competence Center, Greifswald will support the MIRACUM partners in establishing procedures for the secure storage and use of personal data considering all relevant data protection regulations. “The independent Trusted Third Party of the University Medicine Greifswald represents an important resource for a multitude of research projects. We are pleased to contribute the software tools developed in Greifswald and the experience gained to the MIRACUM consortium.” explains the Dean of Greifswald University Medicine, Prof. Max P. Baur.
With now 10 universities, two universities of applied sciences and one industrial partner, MIRACUM is the largest of the four consortia funded in the MII. Prof. Dr. Hans-Ulrich Prokosch, Chair of Medical Informatics at the FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg and leader of the MIRACUM consortium, is pleased to report: “The strength of MIRACUM is the bundling of partners with many synergistic competences. With the new partners Dresden and Greifswald we have successfully expanded the consortium with two important competence centres.”

Lively participation at the MIRACUM-Workshop at the annual GMDS conference

During the 63rd GMDS conference from 2nd to 6th September in Osnabrück, MIRACUM organised a workshop on the topic “Medical Data Science: Consolidation and usage of distributed data in the health care system – presentation of first results of the consortium”. We are very pleased about the active participation of more than 70 interested researchers, who – despite many parallel workshop sessions – followed our invitation, took part in vivid presentations and discussions and gave us so much positive feedback!

We are looking forward to seeing you next year again at the GMDS!
